Brownell first started getting curious about wishing as she was writing about a fictional world in her latest novel, A Love Story to the Universe. In it, she envisioned a realm called Astraea where wishes are gathered, sorted and granted. Writing about this magical world led her to explore and define wishing: what wishing is, how wishes are answered, what happens when people wish together, and more.
Then, one night Brownell was listening to a lecture about neuroplasticity (she’s a little odd that way) and a question formed:

Brownell isn’t the first storyteller who proposed ideas that science expanded and brought into reality. Just think of all the inventions that sprung from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek, even the Simpsons!

Brownell likes to quote a friend of hers years ago. “I might not be able to do that myself, but I have ten friends who can!” Therefore, she leveraged the genius of over 70 different scientists (and over a hundred research studies) to explain.
